MARCH, 2016, PHILADELPHIA, PAThe University City Arts League (UCAL) will host its 34th Annual Spring Gala and Benefit Auction on May 7, 2016 from 6-10 pm at the newly renovated University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. The theme for this year’s auction is HeART of the City.

In celebration of UCAL’s 49th year, the auction will focus on the many local artists that make Philadelphia one of the most exciting cultural cities in America, offering 49 miniature paintings created by 49 local artists for just $49 each.

“We wanted to update our annual auction in a way that really spoke to the core of the UCAL’s mission—to ensure that the arts are enriching our community every day, accessible to people of all ages and every background,” said Annette Monnier, Executive Director. “Offering affordable local art really does that.”

Breaking the traditional auction format, the miniature paintings will be “buy-it-now” and available to auction guests on a first-come-first-served basis.  Among the artists contributing works are Becky Suss, who recently exhibited at the Institute of Contemporary Art; Jennifer Levonian, who is currently exhibiting at Fleisher/Ollman; Paul Swenbeck, a 2013 Pew Fellow; and Jacque Liu, who will exhibit at the Arts League in September and currently has a show at the Lansdowne Arts Board.

Also new to this year’s auction, one of the community’s most eagerly awaited spring events, is a VIP reception, featuring early access to the 49 mini paintings with champagne and passed hors d’oeuvres, and a post-auction dance party featuring the sounds of DJ Emcee Elroy.

Of course, the evening will also include UCAL’s popular live auction, which this year will focus on substantial works by nationally known local artists, and a silent auction filled with artful experiences, stay-cations and out-of-town getaways.  Artists whose work will be featured in the live auction are: Miriam Singer, Patrick Maguire, Kathleen Shaver, Douglas Witmer, Kate Abercrombie, Sarah Gamble, and Amze Emmons. More information about these works can be found on our auction page as pictures become available.

The University City Arts League is a non-profit arts center that has been committed to the West Philadelphia neighborhood it resides in since 1965. Each year our programs touch the lives of over 7,000 people through an exciting array of classes for children and adults, critically acclaimed gallery exhibits highlighting local and emerging artists and off-site classes at local public schools, senior centers and homeless shelters.
